HMT IRON TEST KIT
Number 26 on the "periodic table" of elements
Tests the presence of ions of iron to a high degree of accuracy to
detect contamination in the body and on a wide range of materials in your environment
How to Test
Preparation of Test Solutions
- Remove the 2 indicator sticks, pipette, vials and litmus paper from the large test tube
- Cut the litmus paper into a few pieces - about 5 or 6 small pieces
- In the empty large test-tube, add 2 ml. (maximum) of the solution to be tested
- Check the pH solution to be tested in the large test-tube by dropping a piece of litmus paper in it
- If the solution is too alkaline (the litms paper turns blue), add 2 drops of the colourless Reagent 2 from the vial with the
yellow-cap with the help of the pipette into the solution in the large test-tube
- Shake the large test-tube gently to mix the solutions. Check again by dropping another piece of litmus paper into the mixed
solution in the large test tube
- If the solution is still too alkaline, repeat steps (5) and (6). Repeat this procedure until the mixed solution in the large
test-tube turns the litmus paper pink or red (acidic)
- The solution is now ready for testing of Iron (FeII) and Iron (FeIII) ions
Conducting the test
Test 1 - Test for Iron (FeII):
- Put the indicator stick into the mixed solution in the large test-tube for one (1) second. The reaction area of the indicator stick
must be completely immersed in the solution in the large test-tube
- Pull out the indicator stick and shake off any excess liquid
- Wait 10 seconds and compare the colour of the indicator stick to the colour strip provided
- Take note of the reading from the colour chart
Test 2 - Test for Iron (FeIII):
- Add all the powder in the clear-cap vial (Reagent 1) to the solution to be tested in the large test-tube
- Close the cap of the large test-tube and shake gently for a very short while
- Put the second (unused) indicator stick into the mixed solution in the large test-tube for one (1) second. The surface of
the indicator stick must be completely immersed in the solution in the large test-tube
- Pull out the indicator stick and shake off any excess liquid
- Wait 10-15 seconds and compare the colour of the indicator stick to the colour strip provided
- Take note of the second reading from the colour chart
- The concentration shown in this test indicates the total ions of Iron (FeII) and Iron (FeIII). In order to find out
the concentration of Fe(III) ions, subtract the results obtain in Test 1

The numbers indicate parts per million.
